WHO IS R.E. TECHNOLOGIES RACING?

The answer to that question is rather a long one with many twists and turns.

R.E. Technologies, as a division of Kele & Associates, was originally founded in 1983 by Roger Johnson, an electronic engineering technologist, to manufacture specialty electronic devices.  In 1990, Johnson became involved in racing as a sponsor for family friend, Greg Hodnett’s, sprint car team. Over the next several years, Roger helped a number of sprint car drivers chase their dreams.

At the beginning of 2000, he turned his interest in racing into R.E. Technologies Racing to compete with the United States Auto Club, specifically the Silver Crown Series. His mission:  to give drivers a chance to run with a top level team that they may not otherwise have.

Danny Drinan and Jerry Coons, Jr. shared the seat the first year the team competed full-time with USAC. In 2001, the team put Coons behind the wheel for all 13 races. The Arizona native responded giving the team seven top-10 finishes, three 2nd place finishes and their first pole at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. Jerry’s top-5 in driver points earned him “Most Improved Driver” that year. Coons returned in 2002 and scored a pole at Syracuse for the team and finished second in the race. He followed that up with another second place at Springfield and the team finished eighth overall in car owner points. The 2003 season saw World of Outlaw sprint car talents Tyler Walker and Donny Schatz climb in the No. 35 and No. 115 cars respectively. That year Walker finished third at Tulsa and Springfield. Finishing fourth in car owner points and fifth in driver points earned Walker the Silver Crown “Most Improved Driver” award just like Coons had done two years earlier. In 2004, up and coming driver Boston Reid, took the reins of the No. 35. Jerry Coons Jr. returned for four races grabbing the pole at Springfield. In 2005, Coons again returned to the R.E. Technologies Racing team full time.

A new generation began in 2006 for a couple of reasons. The season started with a name change for the team. R.E. Technologies Racing became Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing as the emerging NASCAR star partnered up with the organization. And a new generation Silver Crown car was unveiled by USAC. A young Canadian Roush Racing development driver named Peter Shepherd would pilot the new No. 199 on pavement and Jerry Coons Jr. was back to drive the dirt events. Carl Edwards took over the helm of the No. 199 for Shepherd at ORP and battled Brian Tyler in the very memorable final laps of the race. The team was consistent scoring top-5 finishes giving Carl Edwards/ R.E. Technologies Racing their first 3rd place car owner finish. The team took the No. 199 to Florida for the final PRA Big Car race of the season with Bobby Santos III behind the wheel. Santos would give the team their first trip to victory lane.

The winning vibe continued into the 2007 USAC Silver Crown Series opener at Manzanita. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. had worked with the team in 2006 wrenching on the cars and started five dirt races as well as the final PRA race. Team Manager Chris Santucci put Stenhouse behind the wheel for the season opener and he did not disappoint winning his first and the team’s first USAC Silver Crown event. Following the season opener, Carl Edwards/R.E. Technologies Racing had to have success on pavement with Cameron Dodson behind the wheel. The team returned to the Phoenix area for the final race of the year at Phoenix International Raceway. The promising youngster proved his driving abilities by winning the Copper World Classic in front of a NASCAR crowd, locking up third place Owner points for the second year in a row and claiming “Rookie of the Year” honors.

Carl Edwards/R.E. Technologies Racing will be back on track in 2008 with Roush Fenway development driver, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., behind the wheel.
